Acupuncture can help mother and baby by addressing common pregnancy problems. It can further help to maintain your general health during the different stages of pregnancy. Research has shown that acupuncture is a very effective treatment for nausea, improving your mood, reducing anxiety and relieving pain during pregnancy.
During the last trimester of pregnancy acupuncture can help prepare the body for labour, whilst building up the energy for the post-natal period, as, when you have a baby energy reserves can run low. This can help prevent post-natal depression and restores your energy low energy may affect milk production and your mood.
Research has shown that acupuncture is very helpful in turning breech babies at around 34 to 35 weeks; approximately 30% more babies turn with this specific treatment.
Acupuncture can also help bring on labour when baby is overdue.
Severe vomiting (hyperemesis) and Nausea
Severe vomiting (hyperemesis) can be experienced during pregnancy, usually during the first 12 weeks. Acupuncture can help to relieve the discomfort of hyperemesis.
Musculoskeletal conditions
Acupuncture can be used to treat musculoskeletal problems such as low back and pelvic pain and is proven to reduce pain by stimulating the brain and spinal cord to produce endorphins (natural pain-relieving chemicals), melatonin (which promotes sleep) and serotonin (to promote wellbeing).
Turning babies from breech to head down presentation
A technique called moxibustion may be effective for turning babies from breech to head down presentation, in addition to acupuncture. Herbal moxa sticks are lit and held over acupuncture points. The heat of the moxibustion helps to increase foetal movement, which may help to turn the baby. You will be advised how to perform moxibustion at home.
Acupuncture is a natural and gentle treatment which may help prepare for labour.
It can encourage the body to naturally release the hormones that soften and ripen the cervix (prostaglandins) and the hormone that triggers contractions (oxytocin). It can help to bring the baby into the best possible position for birth, helps to relax muscles and tendons, calms the mind and strengthens the blood and energy levels in order to prepare for labour and birth.
Evidence shows that acupuncture can reduce the chances of being overdue and makes it less likely that birth will need to be induced.
Lola advises her patients to book appointments for birth preparation at least four weeks before due date.
